                  Injury Information - Bulging Discs

Bulging discs are some of the most common injuries from car accidents. Bulging discs are caused when the neck or back is violently extended forward and backward in an accident.  As the neck extends and retracts, the vertebrae bones put pressure on the discs between the bones.

Car accidents commonly cause bulging discs.

Bulging discs are misshapen spinal discs that may or may not cause pain.

Spinal discs are made of a gelatin-like material which acts as shock absorbers between the bones known as vertebrae. A spinal disc has a soft core called the nucleus which is surrounded by a stiffer layer called the annulus. Spinal discs protect the spinal cord and nerve endings that extend out of the spinal cord.  If we didn’t have spinal discs we would not be able to bend our neck or waist or twist our body.

When discs are damaged in a car accident or truck accident the usual disc injuries are disc bulging or even worse disc herniations.  When the pressure from the vertebrae flattens out a spinal disc, the disc may become misshapen.  A misshapen or oblong disc is usually known as a disc bulge.
