Warning: Possible cell phone charging danger!

Dec 11th, 2007 | By Michael L. Saile, Jr., Esq. | Category: Blogs, Dangerous Products

I received this information which was forwarded from a friend/client. I cannot verify the accuracy of this information, but it fits with the theme of this injury law blog and may help prevent future unnecessary injuries or death.

I have seen no warnings set forth from the federal government, including the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Use your discretion.

Warning:

‘Never, ever answer a cell phone while it is being RECHARGED!! A few days ago, a person was recharging his cell phone at home. Just at that time a call came in and he answered it with the instrument still connected to the outlet. After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers. He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cell phones are a very useful modern invention. However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death. Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!”

  1. Could a wronful death suit be brought upon the cell phone manufacturer?

  2. Sure this would be a type of products liability lawsuit.

  3. By the way, I think the time stamp on the posts have the wrong time; not that it matters that much. But it is only 11:42 am here in NJ, and you last posts says 12:33 pm.

Unless you are posting from the small eastern time zone is eastern Maine, this can not be possible.

Not that this can ever happen… but lets say someone is accused of something criminal, and they can prove they didnt do it cause they were home posting on this website, but the time stamp on the posts is off by an hour, this could cause can innocent person to be wrongly arrested.

not that it really matters that much, just wanted to let you know.

i dont expect you to post this comment.

  4. Thanks Jim. I didnt notice but it should be fixed now.

The blog time never adjusted for daylight savings time.

  5. this email was covered on the following site, appears to be based on a single occurance:

    http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_cell_phone_electrocuted.htm

  6. Thanks Tim. Sounded like B.S. to me. We would have heard about this all over the news if it were true.

  7. You mention the news Mr. Saile,,,

There are some points here to be made with regards to the ‘news”, as common people would refer to it as watching the television at 6pm or 630pm on any abc, nbc, or cbs affiliate or network.

The news is a prime example of what some people in academic environments refer to as front page/ back page environments for inform ing citizens as to what is going in in there communities.

News, as such, under this academic scrutiny, can not be assumemed to be incomplete and inaccurate.

It can only be assumed to be an incomplete effort to inform the public of the events going on around them.

the fact thatr this cell phone death was not on the news does in no way make a LEGITMATE CASE THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN!
