Two recent speed traps that I have seen in the last two weeks…

Nov 21st, 2007 | By Michael L. Saile, Jr., Esq. | Category: Blogs, PA & NJ Speed Traps

In the past two weeks I have been doing a lot of traveling or shall we say driving. I have been representing many truck drivers who have received PA speeding tickets. Last week, I had to travel more than 2 hours in each direction to represent a truck driver with a CDL license. DMV points for a person with a CDL license can be especially harmful to their employment.

In my travels, I came across two PA speed traps. Both of these PA speed traps were conducted by PA State Troopers. As you may know, in Pennsylvania, only State Police officers are permitted under law to use radar. This does not prevent local police officers from using other means to catch you speeding.

The first speed trap was in Montgomery County, PA. It was conducted by a PA State Trooper using what appeared to be a radar gun. The trap was located a few miles up the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike (Route 476) on the Northbound side of the highway. Throughout the PA Turnpike, there are cut-outs on the right side for vehicles that break down or drivers that need a rest. In this cut-out, there was some sort of a parked truck. Behind the truck and shielded from the view of approaching traffic was the PA State Trooper with his radar gun pointed out the window.

The second speed trap was also conducted by the PA State Police. This time the speed trap was located on the Philadelphia-Bucks County border just North of the Woodhaven Road exit. Within the past month, PennDot completed construction of some paved areas between the I-95 North and Southbound lanes. In this newly paved area, there was a construction vehicle parked. It appeared that this truck had been there for several days. On the South side of the truck was the PA State Police car shielded from the Southbound traffic.

  1. wasn’t there a bill passed (or maybe it was just being debated) that would require pa state troopers to keep a certain percentage of their vehicles visible when conducting a speed trap? this was last year sometime…

  2. Tim:

Did you hear this in PA or NJ? I have not heard anything like this, but I would be interested to know.

  3. iF THE CONSTRUCTION TRUCK WAS STILL THEIR, MAYBE THE POLICE ALSO WANT TO DOUBLE THEFINES, FOR SPEEDING IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE.
