This month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released their 2006 Traffic Safety Annual Assessment.

Some highlights of the report include the fact that fatal U.S. traffic crashes declined from 2005 by 2% representing the largest decline since 1992.    Fatalities from passenger vehicle accidents, including car accidents and light truck accidents, pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents have also declined.  U.S. motor vehicle accidents resulting in personal injuries have also declined.

An alarming trend for 2006 was a 5.1% increase in motorcycle accidents causing deaths.  This is probably due to the increase in motorcycle popularity in the last five years.   Many new and inexperienced motorcyclists have hit the roads causing this increase in motorcycle accidents.

During the years 2005-2006 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in PA decreased from 1,616 in 2005 to 1,525 in 2006.   PA had 91 fewer deaths from PA motor vehicle accidents in 2006, which represents a decrease of 5.6%.

On the other hand, people killed in motor vehicle crashes in NJ increased from 747 in 2005 to 772 in 2006.   NJ had 25 more deaths from NJ motor vehicle accidents in 2006, which represents an increase of 3.3%.

NHTSA measures these figures by a census of all crashes of motor vehicles traveling on public roadways in which a person died within 30 days of the crash.
