Pennsylvania may make its DUI-DWI-DAI law even tougher!

Aug 21st, 2007 | By Michael L. Saile, Jr., Esq. | Category: Blogs, DUI-DWI-DAI (Drunk Driving)

PA legislators are considering changing the already strict PA DUI-DWI-DAI law to help prevent repeat DUI-DWI-DAI offenders.  The bill would mandate ignition interlock systems to be installed on all first time PA DUI-DWI-DAI offenders’ vehicles.  Currently in Pennsylvania, ignition interlock systems are only required for 2nd, 3rd, or more PA DUI-DWI-DAI convictions.

For those of you who do not know, ignition interlock is a kind of mini breath test machine that is installed in your car.  Every time a driver wants to start the vehicle and keep the vehicle running, he or she must blow into this machine.   The machine will then check the driver’s breath for the presence of alcohol.   If the ignition interlock machine determines that there is more than 0.025 percent blood alcohol, the vehicle will not start or will shut down.

There are many organizations all over the country that fight against drunk driving.  Our legislature and courts are constantly changing the current PA DUI-DWI-DAI law making the penalties fiercer.  The ignition interlock system is a good tool to prevent PA DUI-DWI-DAI offenses.

I believe that alcohol related DUI-DWI-DAI offenses, accidents, deaths, and injuries could be completely prevented.  If the federal government in conjunction with all the States decided that every vehicle on the road should have standard ignition interlock systems, then the DUI-DWI-DAI carnage will stop.  Why haven’t the states enacted such laws?

Of course this would not be good for DUI lawyers, but alcohol related PA DUI-DWI-DAIs would be virtually wiped out.   This type of law could not prevent drug related PA DUI-DWI-DAIs, but I am sure it would reduce the thousands of deaths each year resulting from alcohol related DUI-DWI-DAIs.   What do you think?
