PennDOT eliminates license plate replacement law…
Jan 28th, 2009 | By Michael L. Saile, Jr., Esq. | Category: BlogsIt used to be Pennsylvania law that license plates on all registered PA vehicles had to be replaced by PennDOT every 10 years. As of January 26, 2009, a new law went into effect removing this mandate. PennDot will now replace license plates only on an as needed basis, which is estimated to save the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania $59 million over the next three years.
Because materials of higher quality and greater durability have been chosen for the manufacture of the state’s license plates in recent years, the Commonwealth found it could do away with the 10-year license plate replacement law.
Under the new law, PennDOT must replace illegible license plates, at no charge to registered drivers. A license plate can be judged illegible only by a certified mechanic during inspection or by a law enforcement officer. A plate is deemed illegible if one or more letter or numbers cannot be recognized from a distance of 50 feet.
