Diabetes Drug: Avandia may cause bone fractures

Dec 3rd, 2007 | By Michael L. Saile, Jr., Esq. | Category: Blogs, Dangerous Products

Recent research on the Type II diabetes (adult onset diabetes) drug Avandia may cause a breakdown or fracturing of bones or osteoporosis. Avandia which is a GlaxoSmithKline drug has been found to cause bone degradation in lab mice.

There is a warning for Avandia which states “More fractures have been observed in women taking Avandia.” I am not sure if this warning has always been part of the drug’s advisories or it is a recent response to this new research to prevent lawsuits. This warning was found today on the Avandia website.

The legal question is whether this warning was effective to warn the thousands or people who have taken Avandia since its creation. Certainly, elderly women should have been warned about this bone problem. It appears that GlaxoSmithKline was aware of some problem with Avandia and osteoporosis.

Should additional research have been done about this bone problem? Adult onset diabetes is obviously a condition for “older” people. If GlaxoSmithKline knew that this could be a problem effecting older people, should there have been more warnings?

I am sure there will be lawsuits about Avandia and osteoporosis. Do you think GlaxoSmithKline should have done more research knowing that the consumers of Avandia may have been elderly women who commonly have osteoporosis? If GlaxoSmithKline knew there was a problem, should the osteoporosis warnings been more evident?
